Maputo
is Mozambique’s
main destination in
terms of tourist numbers, especially when
taking into consideration that there were
1,836,143 visitors last year (sourceINE /
Migration).
According
to statistics provided by INE, the
city of Maputo
received about 321,041 domestic
and foreign guests in 2010, registering
an
increase of 38.8%.
In the
category of medium-length stays, the city
of Maputo
outperformed itself once more
in relation to other provinces of the country,
with an average of 2.1 days per stay.
Sofala was the only province which equaled
that average length of stay.
According
to the Study of the Value Chain (conducted
by SNV in collaboration with the
Ministry of Tourism, CMMaputo, Cedarte, ICC
and the Programme for Creative Industries
of the United Nations), it was noted
that although many visitors came to Mozambique
motivated by the prospect of Leisure
& Holidays, almost 60% of visitors arrived
in the city of Maputo
in 2010, mainly
for
professional reasons.
This
information is particularly important if the
purpose is to step up the levels
of
live music and entertainment on offer
in the city, and create tourism that is
suited
to business people, as in cities like Nairobi, Cape Town, São Paulo, London and Tokyo.
